Quick Start: Your First Pattern in 5 Steps

  1. Add an Image: Click the ‘Upload’ button in the floating toolbar or drag-and-drop a PNG file onto the main canvas.
  2. See the Seamless Magic: Drag your image towards any edge. A “clone” will instantly appear on the opposite side, showing you exactly how the pattern will repeat.
  3. Arrange & Transform: Click the image to select it. Drag it around, resize it with the corner square handle, and rotate it with the top circle handle.
  4. Duplicate & Build: Select your image and click the ‘Duplicate’ button (❐) in the Layers panel on the right. Arrange the new copy to build up your design.
  5. Export Your Tile: When your design is complete, click the green ‘Export…’ button. A new window will appear; click ‘Download’ to save your pattern tile.

Understanding the Workspace

The Left Sidebar: Setup & Tools

This is your main control area. Panels will appear and disappear here depending on what you have selected.

  • Canvas Setup: Set the final `Width`, `Height`, and `Resolution (PPI)` of your pattern tile. Use 72 PPI for screens and 300 PPI for printing. You can also change the `Background` color here.
  • Geometry Creator: Add simple shapes like circles, squares, or stars to your design. This is perfect for creating background textures.
  • Image Adjustments: Fine-tune a selected image. Change its `Opacity` (transparency), `Brightness`, `Contrast`, `Saturation`, and `Hue` (color tint).
  • Align & Distribute: When you select two or more objects, this panel appears. Use it to perfectly align objects to their centers or edges, and to space them out evenly.

The Right Sidebar: Layers

Think of layers like a stack of clear plastic sheets. Each object (image or shape) you add gets its own sheet. The layer at the top of the list is in front of everything else.

  • Select a Layer: Click on a layer in the list to select its object on the canvas. Hold `Ctrl` (or `Cmd` on Mac) to select multiple layers.
  • Visibility: Click the eye icon (đŸ‘ī¸/🙈) to hide or show a layer without deleting it.
  • Reorder: Use the up (↑) and down (↓) arrows to move a layer in front of or behind other layers.
  • Delete: Click the trash can (đŸ—‘ī¸) to permanently remove a selected layer. You can also press the `Delete` or `Backspace` key on your keyboard.

Pro Tips & Advanced Features

  • Use the Grid: In the `Canvas Setup` panel, check ‘Show Grid’ and set a `Grid Size`. This helps you place your elements with precision.
  • Save Your Project: Use ‘Save File’ (not Export) to save your entire workspace as a .sspm file. This saves all your layers, positions, and settings so you can continue working on it later. Use ‘Open File’ to load it back in.
  • Undo/Redo: Don’t be afraid to experiment! Use the `Undo` (↊ī¸) and `Redo` (â†Ēī¸) buttons in the floating toolbar, or press `Ctrl+Z` and `Ctrl+Y` on your keyboard.
  • Transparent Backgrounds: When you click ‘Export…’, you can check the ‘Transparent Background’ box. This is essential for creating patterns that can be placed on top of any color or image.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ‘Save File’ and ‘Export…’?
This is a key concept:
  • Save File: This saves your entire project as a .sspm file. It keeps all your layers, positions, and settings separate and editable. Use this to save your work-in-progress.
  • Export…: This creates the final, usable pattern tile as a single .png image. This is the finished product. You cannot edit the individual layers in this file after exporting.
How do I create a pattern with a transparent background?

When you click the green ‘Export…’ button, a pop-up window will appear. In that window, simply check the ‘Transparent Background’ box before you click ‘Download’. This will create a PNG tile where only your objects are visible, which is perfect for placing over any color or background.

What file type should I upload?

This tool is optimized for PNG images, especially those that already have transparent backgrounds. This gives you the most creative freedom when layering and arranging your pattern elements.

What canvas size and resolution (PPI) should I choose?
It depends entirely on your final goal:
  • For Websites & Digital Use: A canvas size between 300×300 and 800×800 pixels is a great start. Set the Resolution to 72 PPI (Screen).
  • For Printing (Fabric, Paper, etc.): You need higher quality. Use a larger canvas size (e.g., 2000×2000 pixels or more) and set the Resolution to 300 PPI (Print) for crisp, professional results.
The tool is running slowly. How can I speed it up?

Performance depends on your computer and the complexity of your design. If you notice a slowdown, try these tips:

  • Resize Large Images First: If you are using very high-resolution photos, consider resizing them to be closer to your canvas size *before* you upload them.
  • Limit Your Layers: While there’s no hard limit, having dozens of layers can be demanding. Try to combine elements where possible if performance is an issue.
Can I use the patterns I create for commercial projects?

Yes. This tool runs entirely in your browser. You own the copyright to the unique patterns you create, subject to the rights of the original images you use. Always ensure you are using legally obtained or self-created graphics for any commercial work.
